Stress and Resilience
How a person responds to increased stress is influenced by factors such as the scale of the stress, the accumulation of stress, the duration, and other aspects such as level of social / family / work support systems.
Resiliency is the capacity to adapt, improvise and respond to challenge effectively. People respond in different ways when a challenging event is experienced.
- Highly resilient people respond to the challenging event by performing at a significantly higher level. They are self reliant, flexible and creative.
- Others learn from the experience of challenge quickly and can increase their performance to deal with the challenge effectively. They are reliable, adaptable and competent.
- Other people become disengaged from work. Although they are physically present, they are poorly motivated and have a negative impact on those around them.
- Finally, others are already overwhelmed and often experience high levels of anxiety.
EAP Consultants provide a range of Training Programmes that address Stress Management and Resilience.
For Managers:
Managers within organisations often carry the task of responding to employee issues that might potentially interfere with building and maintaining an effective working environment. This is of increased significance at this time, when the working environment has become increasingly pressurised, both from external and internal stressors. The programmes are set in the context of a Manager’s responsibility within Health and Safety legislation and organizational best practice procedures. It will address:
- Recognising signs of distress
- Mental health awareness
- Identifying intervention skills and strategies
- Responding appropriately
- The referral process
- Follow up with colleagues
For all Employees:
Trying to make sense of ‘out of the ordinary’ events can be overwhelming. We often just put our heads down and ‘get on with it’, holding the tension and emotions within ourselves. As a short term strategy this is often effective, but long term, this can be very damaging to our health and well being.
Though stress is a normal and predictable aspect of both work and personal life, we often are taken unawares by the damaging impact it can have on our physical and emotional wellbeing. The Workshop will focus on practical strategies in the following areas:
- How vulnerable are you to stress?
- What are the stressors?
- Your knowledge and preparation for stress
- Your resilience and tolerance to stress
- Your support systems
