Drug & Alcohol Programmes
Approximately one in five employed persons experience problems related to alcohol and over half of all Irish drinkers have a harmful pattern of drinking. The use of illegal drugs and use/misuse of prescription drugs may also have damaging consequences at work. Alcohol and drug use can lead to absenteeism, lowered productivity and problematic working relationships.
Most workplaces have a Drug & Alcohol Policy that:
- Outlines a clear statement of the behaviour expected of employees and applies equally to all employees, including managers and supervisors, in the workplace
- Is part of a comprehensive health and safety programme
- Is known to all employees
- Provides for appropriate treatment and rehabilitation for employees with issues.
However, as with all policies, a Drug & Alcohol policy is only of benefit if it is supported and revisited on a regular basis.
EAP Consultants can provide training in two essential areas:
- Education and information on drugs and alcohol
- Identification, intervention and referral strategies for managers and supervisors.
